By taking the risk of putting my work out there, I learned that people actually liked what I was creating

My reasons for writing and my tastes in reading can and probably will change again, but for now, it’s all about comfort and escape. I’m not out to change the world or work through difficult emotions, though I respect anyone who takes on those challenges. I cringe at anything I write based on my own life. Creating my own world in my writing helps me make it through this one.

One of the things that makes soaps so compelling is that they are deliberately designed to feel as ‘real’ as possible

Monday’s episode might mention what happened over the weekend, episodes rarely span more than one day and tend not to involve large jumps in time. Soaps will also occasionally insert topical scenes, edited in at the last minute, referencing significant events such as the Olympics or Brexit – another deliberate ploy to maintain that sense of currency and connection to the real world. Everything is designed to make us feel that the events of Albert Square or Emmerdale or Wetherfield are continuing alongside our own lives – we just happen to drop in on them from time to time.
